The Deal – Elle Kennedy

Rating : ♥♥♥♥
My review :
« The Deal » or the most endearing book from the « University romance » genre ! Book one from the Off-campus serie is according to me the perfect illustration of the expression « feeling in love while reading ».
I have to admit that at the 5 first pages I was doubtful. We learned outright about the traumatic event that scarred our female character and I immediately thought there would be a lot of unnecessary drama. Then, the hero appears and I thought of the cliché of the good-looking football captain who’s full of himself. Well, guess what ? It was that…but so much more !!! (Fisrt, because he was a hockey captain and not a football one…yeah, that’s definitely not the same thing…duh.)
Garrett is confident (a little too much sometimes) but so funny and endearing. Hannah is strong, humble and smart. They’re both talented and determined. Elle Kennedy created characters with such depth and realism that I never wanted the story to end. The remarkable thing the author did in writing this book I think is : taking a « deja-vu » scenario and turning it into something entirely unique.
To be short, « The Deal » is the story of Garrett, a student from Briar University and captain of the hockey team. He has a dream : turning professional at the end of his studies. The thing is, if he wants to keep playing he needs to improve his grade in Ethics, following to a fail exam. As it happens, Hannah Wells has gotten an A. Garrett decides then to make a deal : he helps her at making her crush jealous by going out with her and she has to tutor him.
Really cliché said like that. However, I loved the paradox of the characters :
- Garrett : an athelete status that doesn’t keep him from being a good student (except for the Ethics incident). A party way of life but with its limits.
- Hannah : a smart girl without getting into the « nerd » cliché. A musician and a singer determined to achieve her goal but with her head on her shoulders.
From the moment those two exchange a conversation, there are sparks. I won’t spoil so I’ll just say that while reading this book you’ll get hilarious scenes, lively dialogues, a relationship coming along naturally and beautifully, honest and assertive characters and a more than endearing couple.
I’m definitely putting this book in the « smile-on-my-face-while-reading » category.
To conclude, a funny, sexy and light read but with enough depth to make this book special.
